Many students do not read the music but have a tendency to memorize where the fingers go. I’m going to show you how to use Alfred Publishing Company’s Complete Color Coded Flash Cards to learn to read music.

Start with four flash cards, the two middle Cs, bass F, and treble G. The purpose of this is to quickly recognize these musical notes as they are what define the bass and treble clefs, F and G. These help as landmarks in reading music. In this particular package, they are numbers 13, 17, 22, and 26.

On the back of the card, you see not only the letter name of the note but also where you’ll find the particular note on the piano keyboard. Incorporate cards of neighboring notes once you’ve learned to read the first four cards quickly.
